The neighborhood traces its origins to Charles Leedom (1826-1912), a Philadelphia-born entrepreneur who made his fortune in the Pennsylvania oil fields during the 1860s boom. He retired to Ridley Township in the 1880s, building his home on Chester Pike on the very site where Leedom School stands today. After his death, his grandson Charles L. Andrews developed the property beginning in the summer of 1941 -- and in a nod to American history that locals still talk about, every original street in the development was named for a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Braxton Road, Rodney Road, Clymer Lane, and their neighbors aren't random names -- they're a deliberate tribute to the founders, laid out by a developer who clearly had a sense of place.

Westinghouse had a huge plant in this area of Delaware County, as did Boeing, Sun Ship, and Bell Atlantic, and they needed housing for their workers. Leedom Estates -- along with the adjacent Ridley Acres and Nassau Village -- answered that call. The signature home style was the Nantucket, a well-built modest colonial that has aged remarkably well and continues to be updated and loved by successive generations of owners.
